The 2016 mare by One Fine Vintage and out of Miss Catty Cash (by Nu Cash) finished with a 500.19 on four head. She also picked up another $750 after placing second in Round 3 with a 126.88.
Fine Vintage Cash didn’t originally stand out as a standout cow horse early on, but she’s found her place in the heeling. In Holcomb’s hands, her style and feel have translated well to the roping pen.
“The last couple runs, she had really good cattle and everything set up right,” Holcomb said. “Those steers were a little tricky early—they wanted to get rough leaving the corner and weren’t the cleanest to track. On one, I had to stay with it a few extra strides and ended up throwing a different kind of loop, but she stayed with me and gave me a chance. That’s what matters—you just work through it and let the horse stay honest.”
Holcomb purchased the mare from Robertson Ranches during her 4-year-old year after she had been shown at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. While she didn’t have an extensive record in the cow horse, her foundation and way of going stood out.
“She’s always been really broke and uses herself well,” he said. “She stays collected, stops clean and straight, and has a lot of feel. That makes a big difference when you go to rope on one. She’s been easy to dally on, and you could tell early on she had the right kind of ability.”
Her sire, One Fine Vintage, has an established record in the reined cow horse world and is continuing to prove himself as a rope horse sire as well.
Holcomb credited much of the run to his partner, Kaleb Driggers, a multiple-time World Champion header.
“Kaleb makes a huge difference,” he said. “He reads cattle as good as anyone, gets them handled right, and puts you in position every time. He knows how to shape a run and never forces anything. Even when a steer isn’t ideal, he stays patient and lets it come together.”
The combination of a seasoned horse, smart runs, and strong teamwork helped secure the win in a competitive field.
